Makradar Technologies / / December 19, 2019
This test focuses on two programs, which reviews you might have read earlier MacRadar. ABBYY FineReader Express Edition, described the main features here and Readiris 11, meet with whom you can on this link. Today, we turn away from the bright advertising slogans, beautiful promises and their own sympathies. Consider only the results of the application as it would be in your home or office.
Three obstacle that will understand what you really need in their work. As in any competition, in the preparation of this test should be guided by certain rules.
Measuring method: ABBYY FineReader Express Edition v. 8.0.0.28.06, Readiris 11 Pro v. 11.6.3 scanning starting materials produced from paper using a HP Scanjet 3570c (300 dpi, TIFF), for the test materials were selected randomly. Documents in rtf format after the conversion were examined using MS Word 2008 v. 12.1.3, table using MS Exel v 12.1.9. Since editing program (viewing) directly affects the display of the conversion result, the reference viewing software was selected products Microsoft.
Ever wanted to adjust the focus on a few basic conditions affecting the performance of the work with OCR systems:
- the correct definition of the so-called "areas" (text, graphics)
- converting correct characters and graphic elements.
1) Continue to give subjects a fairly simple text with some features.
Working with fields:
FineReader - the area defined correctly.
ReadIris - area defined correctly.
conversion * Result:
* (Results Conversions after removing or adding user areas).
FineReader - text converted with no errors, the impression spoils the presence of vertical lines of the frame.
ReadIris - text recognized correctly, the frame around the text program prefers not to notice at all.
2) complicate the problem. Technical text specialized terminology and illustrations.
Working with fields:
FineReader - 1 false area with the background, which had to be removed manually. 1 image was skipped and added manually.
Readiris - 2 false area with the background region 4 with unnecessary objects, the image 1 was omitted and added manually.
Result of conversion:
FineReader - the text is recognized without errors, formatting passed fairly well. Once again the program adds a completely unnecessary vertical stripes. Impressive "intelligence" of the program to understand the very difficult situation - VR letters in the image were not modified in the text.
ReadIris - text converted correctly, formatting transferred correctly. Immediately evident error with VR letters in the image.
3) The old, rather shabby sheet to the table will be a real test.
Working with fields:
FineReader - an area with a table recognized right
ReadIris - a region with recognized right table.
Result of conversion:
FineReader - the text in the cells with a moderate amount of errors. Table Structure converted with some errors, and the proportions of the width of columns met.
ReadIris - text in cells has a large number of bugs and requires a "redial". Table Structure converted with serious errors, the width of columns is not observed.
Consider less significant kachestvama:
- User interface
Subjectively GUI FineReader-and is more positive emotions, layout is more logical and easier to learn. The only thing that raises the question of why there is no Undo command when dealing with "regions".
Readiris The problem is that for a large number of settings have been found an elegant, simple solution, the application less responsive to user actions. Some solutions developers Readiris settings "output format" as xls, can cause issues.
- the conversion rate of both programs is high, but at the moment Readiris not significantly outperforms its competitor.
a couple of the major lines is necessary to add about these software products:
ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac - 2900 rubles.
IRIS ReadIris Pro 11.0 (Mac) - 4019 rubles.
The choice is yours…
