Coffee makes us more honest. That is the conclusion drawn by researchers from the University of Washington, the University of Arizona and the University of North Carolina. Lack of sleep can lead to unethical behavior in the workplace, and a cup of coffee - to save him.
These are the results of the study, the essence of which was as follows.
Volunteers were divided into two groups and asked to stay up all night. On the morning of the volunteers had gum with caffeine (its content was equivalent to two cups of coffee). Then all the participants of the experiment suggested to play a game in which to make money, it was necessary to lie.
The group, which was chewing gum with caffeine, virtually ignored the dishonest transaction. The group, which did not take caffeine, was easier to make compromises with conscience.
Professor David Walsh (David Welsh) explains it this way:
When you do not get enough sleep, you are much easier to agree to unethical offer your boss, because resistance is effortless, and you are so tired.
Thus, caffeine strengthens our self-control and willpower in the moments when the body is exhausted.
Conclusions are supported by scientists and earlier research one of them - Professor Michael Christian (Michael Christian). He studied as a lack of sleep affects a person's behavior. It turned out, the more people enough sleep, the more it is prone to deviant behavior in the workplace.
Employers should recognize that now employees work longer, which means less sleep. Code of ethics is not enough to keep human behavior within corporate standards if he is too tired.
According to scientists, coffee can neutralize the negative effects of lack of sleep. At least, not for long. At the same time, the researchers suggest the following solutions:
- Provide employees their coffee.
- Organize your work schedule: less overtime, more breaks.
- Avoid tasks that require serious self-control in terms of strict deadlines for a long time.
- Provide employees the opportunity to take a nap at work and inform about the importance of sleep.
In popular culture There is a myth that hard work is impossible without a lack of sleep. Our study once again shows that lack of sleep - it is bad, both for the individual and for the organization.
So, if you want your employees to work conscientiously, pour him a cup of coffee. ;)
