On strimingovom Netflix service a new film from the author of "Goodfellas" and "The Departed." Martin Scorsese returns to his favorite subject, and again tells the story of an Italian-American mafia.
This time, he decided to look into the true story of Frank Sheeran, known Irishman who killed many criminals from rival clans. But most importantly, the killer before dying himself admitted that he was behind the disappearance of the famous trade union leader Jimmy Hoffa.
The new work of Scorsese certainly catch the fancy fans of his work and stand on a par with the already mentioned "Goodfellas" and "Casino." But still there are some things that make the picture difficult to understand.
Scale and slow saga
The plot covers virtually the entire career Sheeran (Robert DeNiro), From the time when he was still a young truck driver accidentally met a mafia boss Bufalini Russell (Joe Pesci), and began to do business with him. Fairly quickly the hero became an assistant to the offender and gradually passed from knocking out debt in contract killings.
Then life pushed them with Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) - the leader of the union of truckers, who used his influence, often helping dealers both money and various services. But gradually the way Bufalini and Hoffa went, and Irish had to choose which side he was on.
The long history of nonlinear filed, that makes the picture more exciting. It begins with the story already quite elderly Sheeran. Then the action jumps back years to his joint mission with Bufalini, which in turn triggers a series of flashbacks, introducing the viewer to the beginning of their cooperation.
Thus, the action looks like a multi-layer: the spectator gradually reveal all the important points and put them into the overall picture. And Scorsese In this case, almost in the spirit of David Fincher tries to apply the maximum amount of information.
For example, when the show some new minor participant in the events, titles immediately clarify how and when he died. Here you will notice how little of them died a natural death and freedom.
Consider and weapons used in crimes, organizing murders and many other interesting details. But when the plot moves from crime to the court cases and political intrigue, in the course are the historical records and detailed analysis of the processes.
This approach, coupled with perfectly capture mode and turns retrosaundtrekom "Irishman" in the Encyclopedia of Life mafia, And indeed America 50-70th. Yet it is the global nature makes the picture too ponderous.
"The Irishman" lasts nearly three and a half hours - it's much longer than even the epic, "Casino" of the same Scorsese. In this sense, we can only be glad that the film was released on Netflix, in theaters such duration sure many would be scared off. Here, part of the audience prefers watching divided into two or three sets, turning the picture into a kind of mini-series.
And Scorsese does not save time and dialogues. He generally takes off in its classic style, though, and did not end 90th. The director shows the debt plan, neat installation without excessive flicker and unhurried conversations, revealing not only the main characters, but also their surroundings. This creates the most realistic feeling and turns the screen into a real world, where people are divided into heroes and villains, and each simply pursuing its own goals.
But if someone would think that the author again romanticized the lives of criminals, enough to wait for the last 30 minutes. And there have already become clear that even those who did not die during fights the mafia, ended their lives very sad.
Actors from the past to the present
Of course, many attracted by the fact that the film for the first time in many years gathered a classic "old guard" crime movie. Robert De Niro has several times played with Joe Pesci in Scorsese and repeatedly shooting area shared with Al Pacino in the works of other directors.
Now they are together again, and this provides a terrific actor's game. Although Scorsese did a few ambiguous, showing the characters at different ages by the same artists.
On the one hand, to replace any of them is simply impossible. Besides computer technology every year show more and more natural "smoothing" of persons. And at first glance, the young De Niro and Pesci look quite natural. But if you peer closely, especially on a good screen, you can see that after all their facial expressions and acting of suffering from the effects.
And most of all heroes give movement. All central actors are over 70, and even with diligent rejuvenation of their faces, gestures and behavior appear to be too slow and smooth.
That is why the second half of the film, where actors increasingly appear in its usual form, it looks more alive: they play more freely and emotions already be turned out on the full. But the final scene with Bufalini and especially to Frank Shirane exactly touched anyone.
Scorsese wanted to make "the Irishman" many years. As a result, the picture came out monumental, heavy and complicated. Apparently, such an author and want to see it. Someone similar global scare. Yet mastery of the director and the talent of actors make this film is almost a must for viewing, if not for one night, at least for a few days.
