Wireless printing with AirPrint and AirPort Base Station: a personal experience

Imagine the situation: you have the AirPort router, a printer, but there is no wireless printing. Or even this: you there is wireless printing, there are iOS-device, but there is no AirPrint. What kind of life? Amazon will soon move to the delivery of parcels using flying robots, and you go running to your PC every time you need something to print. Every self-respecting switcher knows that the wireless printer settings do not need a fancy Wi-Fi printer. We'll take a well-worn HP Laserjet 1020, Mac OS X Mavericks and show you how to teach the old man all the modern tricks. Well, almost all.
Wireless printing, as well as all wireless - it's very cool. And if wireless internet is no surprise, then wireless printing will make the girls look at you in another way: in their eyes, you'll be a real messenger from the future, a kind of Leonid Agutin IT-sphere. Here it does not matter what operating system you are using: Windows 7 or OS X - on both the operating system setup is not difficult (on Windows it is, oddly, even easier). So…
If you are using Windows 7,
then you can only feel sorry. Joke. Blue screen of death had long ceased to be the official Windows logo on it is now even possible work, and, as I said, setting up wireless printing to "Seven" is a bit easier than Poppy. All you need to do - plug the printer into a USB-out Airport. Then download the program Bonjour Print Service and three times and click on the mouse, - Bonjour finds itself and identify the printer on the network:
Now you have a wireless printer.
If you are using OS X Mavericks,
in the case of HP Laserjet 1020 everything will be a little more difficult. The model has been released by Hewlett-Packard for more than ten years ago, and the Mavericks (as well as the Mountain Lion) does not have built-in drivers for this printer. On the Internet, they also do not have, and the only way we have found - download huge archive of HP-shnyh drivers from Apple, among which are suitable (in this case, the driver for HP Laserjet 1022). To download, install. Then everything is simple:
Done.
But what if you have more and iOS 7?
Man always enough. Yesterday, the first time you kiss a girl at the door, and today we stare at Megan Fox. Yesterday you still did not have wireless printing, and now you want to print directly from the iPhone. Well, for everything in this world you have to pay a price. iOS only supports AirPrint - Apple printing technology that is only available on some printers. Therefore, for printing ordinary printer, we need to make it AirPrint-like (assuming this AirPrint you will never be).
To solve this problem there are a number of crutches, the most popular of which - handyPrint and Printopia. Both paid, both have a fairly long trial, during which we must decide, will you buy or not. Printopia four times more expensive handyPrint ($ 20 versus $ 5), and taking into account the same functionality, the choice is not difficult to do. The whole problem is reduced to downloading and installing any of these utilities. Let handyPrint for example.
Setting up is simple:
1)
2)
In this whole setup AirPrint is complete, we again failed to teach you something hard. check:
However, the ecstasy of printing from a mobile phone will last until the first turning off the computer. As soon as the computer is asleep, the utility stops with him and - farewell, AirPrint. In that case, there is a solution, however, is not too elegant. The problem is solved by a Bonjour Sleep Proxy- a service that displays the computer from sleep when it receives a request (in our case - the print request). This service, available AirPort routers family (including Time Capsule), no need to download and configure: it is enough to update the firmware of the router to the latest version. All you need to do - to check whether a check mark on the Mac in "wake up from sleep mode upon request" (System Preferences / Energy Saver / Power Adapter).
It should be noted that although the function "wake up from sleep mode upon request" is present on all modern Macs, Apple laptops work with Bonjoir Sleep Proxy only from the power outlet. If you own a desktop computer, like the iMac, Mac Mini or Mac Pro, you do not worry about anything, - AirPrint available whenever the computer is on or sleeping (the final shutdown of a computer, of course, breaks all ties with him). If you have a MacBook, that AirPrint will only work when the laptop at home and put on charge.
If you could do it, now you no longer need to run every time the computer - now you can print photos seals without leaving the couch. Is the last problem: printing itself to you will come running and we have to somehow organize the delivery of printed for you. Read about it in our next article "How to get off the couch and start living."
