Do I need to safely remove a USB flash drive

It is still relevant question: whether to use the option to safely remove the device before you need to remove the USB flash drive from the computer. To find out what it thinks the operating system itself, you can walk to the Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager.
Here we find the tab "Disk drives", expand it and make a right click on the flash drive our way (of course, flash card at this point must be connected). From the menu that appears select "Properties".
In the resulting window, select the tab "Politics". Here is a variant of a memory stick when it is turned off.
As you can see from the screenshot, in Windows there are 2 removal policy: default enabled rapid removal mode, which involves the extraction of the device at any time without the need for a safe option removal. The second mode uses a data cache before burning, which increases productivity, that is, this case, the device speed recording, but require the use of safe extraction.
It turns out that if you do not change the extraction policy, you can remove the flash drive without additional manipulation. Not really. The fact that the flash card can be operated in different modes. For example, you simply copy any files from a computer to removable media. In this case, an appeal to stop the flash drive after copying is complete, but there are situations when you are working directly with the flash cards. You can run the program from removable media, and there is an option that the program with a certain periodicity writes any data to the media. Maybe so, that some of the programs installed on the computer, periodically record the data on a USB flash drive. The easiest way to determine this is to stick with LED read and write data. It happens that it flashes and in the moments when it seemed that you're not doing anything with removable media.
In any case, regardless of the policies recommended removing the flash drive safely. This will avoid data corruption. Moreover, the very process of extraction is carried out just in 2 clicks and does not take much time.
This tip applies to both Windows, and other operating systems.
