1. The reaction of people worse special effects
Quite simply turn the series dedicated to the scale of the accident, in a banal blockbuster oversaturated explosions, death and blood. Or forget about the very essence, having gone to the component of the story. Often such projects, including Russian TV series The premiere of "Chernobyl" - the most anticipated series of NTV in 2019 "Chernobyl" on NTV, talk about any investigation or is inclined to the effects just for the sake of entertainment.
But here the situation is different. Virtually the entire plot of "Chernobyl" is built not on the accident, and its perception by different people: from party officials and scholars to soldiers and homemakers.
On this hint, even the first stage. It starts two years after the accident, when Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) writes a kind of confession, immediately bringing moral of the story, and only then show the main events.
At first it seems that Legasov - only the main character, saving the country from an even greater disaster. But then the series is divided into several lines - so it will be in all the other episodes.
Even the scene of the explosion means that the action is not fixated only on the nuclear plant - an accident occurs somewhere in the distance outside the apartment fire Basil and his wife Ludmila.
There are several important characters from all walks of life, through the perception of which show events. And in each episode adds new characters: an employee of the Nuclear Energy Institute, a team of miners, soldiers, party workers - each of them helps to tell the story from a new angle.
While some people decide how to save the country from an even greater catastrophe, others just experienced the death of loved ones, do not want to leave their homes or perform tasks without even knowing the purpose. Of all these stories, and formed a complete picture of events.
2. Reality becomes convincing due to fiction
The creators of "Chernobyl" obviously studied a lot of documents, interviews and eyewitnesses. And a significant part of the story is based on real stories of participants in the events. But the facts have added more emotional moments of art in order to better reveal the human qualities of each character.
Even when it comes to party workers and scientists, the atmosphere is created not so much by their actions how human emotions and manifestations. In this respect, senior management, of course, is not disclosed: Gorbachev and many ministers have turned almost comical. But shaking hands Legasova and tired eyes Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgard) look completely real.
In the line of these two characters traced classic story of mates, who do not like each other. Only in a very realistic environment. First Legasov seems a hero, and Shcherbina - a typical party careerist. But from episode to episode, they find a common language and approach. And on the first smile Legasova joke for a long time (and the series) it is impossible to not appreciate: Harris plays perfectly. This man will send many people to die.
History Lyudmila Ignatenko (Jessie Buckley) came from the pages of the documentary book "Chernobyl Prayer" Svetlana Aleksievich. And judging by the interviews"The last 17 days that my husband lived after the accident, I was next to him, not knowing that the irradiation X-ray in 1600 will hit me and our unborn child ..." Lyudmila itself, the authors told everything as it was.
Of course, along with real characters in the series appear and fictional characters. But they appear here for a reason. Invented by the authors Juliana Homyuk (Emily Watson) performs an important bridging role in the attempts to understand the causes of the accident.
In reality, everything that she has learned, collected from various documents. But in the art show just read the memories of different people would not be too reasonable. Therefore, it stands witness to all the events and communicate with the real heroes.
3. Invisible radiation can be shown
Terrible consequences of exposure show an example of ordinary people. Fire takes a piece of graphite, and later it takes away an ambulance. station worker holds the door hip, and his clothes were soaked with blood immediately.
But most of the people affected by radiation is not so obvious and not immediately. And so on the scene are accurate. Instead of overloading the picture dying people and show the crowd of firefighters in the hospital, the focus is on the family, who want to see the victims. And then on the long stage with infected clothing: banal action, rhythmic sound, and a second focusing on nurses burn.
Line Lyudmila, who comes to her husband in the hospital, allows you to see the full horror of radiation sickness. But here it's hard to say, it looks worse: the realistic makeup peel off the skin, or the scene funeral, when the coffin is filled with concrete.
In other cases, the authors do not even try to lean toward excessive cruelty, most telling of the very doom and senselessness of attempts to escape. Legasov casually Shcherbina explained that they needed to live a couple of years. Head miners disclaims respirators - it certainly will not save. One of the liquidators tears in strong irradiation boots, and he simply say, "Are you all."
4. Ambient can seamlessly create mood
An important component of any major film or TV project - a sound background. but the traditional soundtrack in "Chernobyl" would simply not approached. Any reference formulation, even very dark, rather destroy the integrity of such stories than help it.
Traditional course of radiation to the story - the crackling Geiger. But this technique has long jaded and also will look artificial in the scenes with ordinary residents of the city. It is used only in a pair of the most intense scenes where it is caused by the plot. Therefore, the image is added to a finely crafted background.
This gloomy ambience, mixed with noise and real sounds: crashing or sirens. The closer the figure to the radiation source, the louder the sound becomes gradually drowning out everything else.
The sound effect is almost the same as the radiation itself: it is invisible, but creates an atmosphere of danger, which, coupled with even minimal knowledge about irradiation makes very simple moments in tragedy. And in order to further understand this condition, the creators of "Chernobyl" to consciously reduce the pace.
Scenes from the hook or the car after a visit to the infected area, the evacuation of people and street watering last long. This is not a blockbuster, where plot twists fall down one by one. This slow and viscous state. And if time stands still at such moments, accompanied by a slow spasmodic sound.
5. Contrasts are made to believe what is happening on screen
If the display on the screen only the horror, the pain and the blood, the audience quickly gets used to it and stop to take history seriously: after all, understand that this is only make-up and special effects. Therefore, the "Chernobyl" is not stingy on the contrasts, creating a contradictory mood.
Very beautiful and aesthetic shooting here do not look less scary than the subsequent death scene. People stand and watch the fire, the children have fun. But one has only to look at the characters, hear the sound, see the radioactive ashes. And it becomes clear that they are all doomed.
In the series, the global constant is adjacent to private. And it is this approach allows you to feel the full horror of the disaster. Any big event there is an analogy in the form of the fate of the common man. We can not say that this new technique: it is often used in disaster stories. But here it works best.
Long shooting from the air chamber are switched on manually following the nurses. The endless string of coaches watching from the side of a young couple. After discussing the possibility of contamination throughout the water close-ups show a conventional crane in a hospital: it will flow from it poison.
The complexity of the evacuation explained by the example of the old woman, who refuses to leave. She was forced to force and threats, and she will hate their saviors.
This particular human history within a global tragedy. As well as the most simple reflection of the terrible burns on the body of the fire: he winces in pain as his wife hugs.
The apotheosis of this approach can be called a storyline on the Elimination of animals. For the benefit of the military shoot any innocent dogs and cats exposed. It is not difficult to guess that the people themselves in Chernobyl It was as exactly the same animal.
Hints at this and the scene of the previous episode, where miners slap on the shoulder and face official, send them to the affected area. He arrived in a clean suit, but now soiled himself.
It feels creative director, screenwriter and cameraman. They create a work of art is filled with a kind of aesthetic, not to indulge in excessive and documentary realism. But just because the viewer, from the distant times and places of action "Chernobyl", the series works so hard.
6. Details create the effect of the presence of
One may criticize the project for any inaccuracies in the reflection of real events and too flat Soviet leaders. But when it comes to the simple life and the details, the series "Chernobyl" is striking in its vitality.
Wallpaper, trash, chipped wooden frames in the hospital - it all seemed to come out of this in 1986. Soldiers and police officers dressed exactly in that form. And in the old Soviet machine numbers with the code CH - Kiev region.
This is very clearly reflects the approach to the project, because even in Russia and Ukraine, not everyone will pay attention to such trifles. But the authors of the series obviously wanted to recreate the atmosphere itself. And because at the beginning of real negotiations inserted dispatchers, the evacuation announcement sounds in Russian as a backdrop that read poems by Konstantin Simonov, then sing a song "Black Crow".
The history of the three divers transferred to the accuracy of memories, and some things even coincide with the real frames chronicles. Tense scene looks the most vividly: the inability to speak, banging the counter, dim light of lanterns. It makes sense not only physical but also moral burden on the heroes.
The subtlety of approach is visible even in the moment with the liquidators, who dropped from the roof of graphite. They are allowed to remain in the danger zone and a half minutes - and exactly the last scene. In this case, there is not a single mounting glue that allows the viewer as if to get into the most dangerous place on earth.
And even the extras in the "Chernobyl" does not look like a typical Hollywood crowd trainees. Here everything is very plausible with clothes and hairstyles. Not 100%, of course, but more accurately now, no one takes off.
To be quite cynical skeptic or watch TV series "Chernobyl" only to find a mismatch, there is something to complain about. Some historical facts changed in a couple of scenes there are plastic windows, and people drink vodka is not so in reality.
But the project failed the main thing - to show the tragedy through the eyes of ordinary people. The authors have put a lot of effort to create a living, not a cinematic atmosphere of fear, to convey to the viewer the full horror of the event. In simple words - as well as the Minister explains Legasov principle of the nuclear power plant. Clear associations and artistic techniques, which are converted into "Chernobyl" in so terrible, but it is very important for each project.
