You're behind the times if you have never worked with a coach

In this article I want to shed light on the topic of coaching, as the former Soviet Union were a lot of mixed information about the coaching and coaches. Some people came to the right coaches and is very happy with the result, while the others were charlatans and realized that just lost money.
In addition, I will give you some tools to get you on yourself feel what coaching.
In this article I will discuss:
- Who is the coach (history, definition).
- Unlike a coach from a psychologist, coach, consultant.
- How to distinguish coaching from the charlatan.
- On what issues customers are turning to coaches.
- The coach can be useful to the client.
- What is the usual coaching sessions.
- How can earn coach.
- Could coaching be useful to you.
- Can you become a coach.
- What is needed to become a coach.
- My way of coaching: I became them and I gave it.
I am sure that my thoughts will seem objective, since, on the one hand, I am a certified coach, on the other hand - Coaching is not the source of my income, because my main job - HR management at the largest Ukrainian channel. In addition, I'll hire a coach for the development of the company's employees and see the various representatives of the profession.
For several years I have been a certified coach. When I tell others that I coach, I constantly ask the same questions:
- Who is the coach? It is that personal growth coach?
- And how do you work with clients? You probably you give them advice?
- Is it true that customers in one coaching session pay $ 100?
- And you really just ask a question?
All long time on hearing the word "coach". Each of us has the word "coach" there are different associations. Someone is currently a coach for personal growth, one psychologist, one charlatan-infobiznesmena, and someone, maybe even inveterate NLP-ers.
Of course, all this has nothing to do with coaching. Just all these people at one time have caught the trend and popularity of coaching began among other regalia to ascribe to themselves the new buzz word "coach".
These coaches generally do not learn anything.
But probably all converge in one: coaches earn good money. And it's really true. Coaching sessions even for novice coach has been around $ 50, but the experienced coaches take from 100 to 200 dollars. But there are others that can take 500 or even 1 000 dollars, but it is usually very well-known coaches who work with the owners of the business, and this work is limited to a series of intensive coaching sessions, between which a pause of 6-12 months, or, alternatively, occasional meetings once month.
But what is most striking - these coaches (and who is currently a coach, I'll discuss later) generally do not learn anything. They do not say what decisions are made, are not forced to work better or more. And that is no less striking, they say the customer is not about his past, and, as a rule, about the future.
So for the people who are asking questions about the future, receive thousands of dollars from their customers?
Try to understand. We start with a definition.
What is coaching?
Official version:
coaching (Eng. coaching - teaching, training) - a method of counseling and training, different from the classical training and classical advice that the coach does not give advice and recommendations hard, and looking for solutions together with the client.
My version:
coaching - a special kind of job coaching with a client through which the client achieves outstanding results faster, easier and happier than he'd been working on their achievement.
A little history
TIMOTHY Galway
It all began with Timothy Galway, who was the author of the concept of inner game, which was the basis of coaching. First concept is described in the book "The Inner Game of Tennis» (The Inner Game of Tennis), published in 1974. It is this date, and can be considered as the date of birth of coaching.
The idea of inner game came to him during a tennis instructor.
The opponent in the head much more dangerous opponent on the other side of the "grid". The task of the coach - help the player to eliminate or mitigate internal obstacles. As a result, a person will manifest the natural ability to learn and achieve efficiency. The purpose of the "inner game" - to reduce any interference with the disclosure and the embodiment of full human potential.
Timothy Galway
John Whitmore
Author of the book "Coaching high efficiency," published in 1992.
He developed the idea of Galway as applied to business and management. John Whitmore - British racing driver, one of the leading business coaches the UK, the creator of the popular model of coaching GROW.
John was a disciple Timothy Galway. In 2007 he was awarded the President of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), which was marked recognition of its work to promote the coaching worldwide.
THOMAS LEONARD
It considered the creator of coaching in the form in which we know it today.
Thomas has been a consultant in finance. One day he noticed that the most successful of its customers rather than ask him for advice on finance, ask how much personal business advice. business leaders, and it was interesting to learn how to respond quickly to the first persons of the companies to changing economic environment, how to effectively manage employees, and someone just could not formulate their further professional goals.
Here are just a small part of the achievements of Thomas:
- University Founder coaches (Coach University - www.coachu.com), The International Coaches Federation (ICF), the International Association certified coach (International Association of Certified Coaches - IAC) and the project CoachVille.com.
- Developed 28 personal and professional programs.
- Author of six books for coaches and 14 domestic exclusive works for coaching students of the University.
- Among the more than 28 programs developed by them have very popular Clean Sweep.
How has coaching
- From 70s to mid-80s - a stage of origin of coaching in the United States.
- Mid 80's - coaching began to spread in the United States.
- Mid-80s - more active coaching in Germany.
- The end of the 80 - In Germany, the development of staff through coaching.
- Start 90 - Europe and the United States started coaching at the division of specialization.
- Mid / late 90's - in Europe and America coaching is gaining momentum.
- From 2002 to the present day - a phase of profound professionalization.
coaching, unlike other forms of assistance and counseling is shown on the chart:
Thus, coaching - is the only way of counseling in which the customer is an expert and coach only asks questions.
How to distinguish this from a coach of the charlatan?
coach | Charlatan |
He studied at the certified school coaches (ECF or ICF) and can present their certificate |
Not studied coaching at all, learned from books, studied with another coach, I attended the non-certified school |
Inspires confidence, does not press his authority, imposes service | Not credible, convincing of the need for their services, using manipulation techniques |
Sets the many questions | Talks a lot, he gives advice |
On the question of the price it gives a straight answer to a specific number | He does not mention the price, asking for what amount you expect to pay offers "all you can" |
Has specialization (career coaching, life coaching, business coaching) | Willing to work with any request |
Can you tell us about your own successful experience in their chosen field. For example, by offering coaching for executives can tell about her at least 5 years of experience managing a team of 20 people |
It can not have experience in the chosen topic. So, for example, engaged in coaching relationships, he has no partner, |

I would also like to talk about the "coach", who studied at the University of Erickson coaching.
It is worth noting that due to the fact that Marilyn Atkinson has spent many years of his life, calling his former teaching of NLP newfangled word "coaching" now many students of this school are perceived as coaches. I do not want to challenge their right to be the way they want to, but obliged to shed light on this question.
Who is Erickson, whose name is called his doctrine:
- So Erickson (Erickson) Milton Hyland (1901-1980) - one of the most popular American psychotherapists XX century.
- He wrote more than 140 works on psychotherapy. In 1923 he developed a number of techniques hypnotherapyIncluding raising hands method.
- Erickson - founder and president of the American Society of clinical hypnosis (American society of clinical hypnosis), Founder and editor of the journal American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. Regularly he conducted his famous seminars hypnotherapy and short straight psychotherapy.
In Erickson's biography does not indicate that he was a disciple of one of the famous at the time coaches (they are in the list above). Besides, the Erickson called himself a coach, and their science - coaching.
But here there was Marilyn Atkinson, who taught his followers to NLP. However, at some point I start to call themselves a coach, without specifying with whom she had studied. Here is information about it:
- Marilyn Atkinson - President of the International University of Erickson, doctor of psychology, coaching, the world famous trainer, a student Milton Erickson, Well-known psychologist.
- Marilyn is the author of many works, since 1985 conducts teaching and advisory activities in major corporations of the world, is the founder and president of the International University of Erickson (Canada) and to this day.
- Marilyn is the author of books on coaching, "LIFE SKILLS: internal dynamics of development", "ACHIEVING GOALS: turn-based system", "LIFE IN A Coaching".
Therefore, coaches who have received international certification, often contending for Atkinson to call themselves a coach, as well as its students.
On what issues customers are turning to the coach?
Range of issues with which clients come to the coach, really great. Here are some of them:
- business planning, budgeting, goal setting.
- Establishing a balance between work and personal life.
- The solution of complex situations.
- Achieving peak performance at work.
- Solution business and personal problems.
- Key decisions and develop strategies.
- Increase sales.
- Manage their lives, instead of giving other people control me.
- Increase by at least the profitability of my company ...
- Remove the adrenaline of my life, so I do not burn out.
- Accelerate the development of my own.
- Develop my own path of growth.
Examples of specific requests, which I worked:
- What career development to choose.
- How to eliminate your weaknesses to become marketing director.
- Learning how to manage a company (the person became a partner recently).
- How to talk to shareholders about its development.
- Increasing the level of their income by 50% for 6 months.
- Create passive income in the amount of $ 200 for 10 months.
- Buying a car (not a loan) for 1 year.
- Career development to the position of head of 1 year.
- Reducing stress levels and intensity of the work to be in a rush.
- Find a boyfriend to the end of the year.
- Gaining life balance (the work was not to the detriment of other areas of life).
- Improving well-being and energy levels.
- Learning to manage your time, identify the opportunities and effectively determine the time frame for completion of tasks.
- Bringing order to the life (instead of the existing chaos).
- Lose weight by 5 kg for 3 months.
What is the usual coaching sessions?
Usual coaching session lasts 60-90 minutes. If frequent meetings could be reduced to 30-45 minutes. Meetings are usually held in a cafe or a restaurant, as well as on the client workplace (in his office or peregovorke). Less often the client comes to the coach office.
Before coaching client session generates its request - a certain task for the duration of the session. During the session, the client with a coach to find a solution to his request.
The result of a coaching session is a clear understanding of the client what to do in order to achieve its goals, and a plan of action, usually for a week.
During the session, the coach asks the customer questions and uses various coaching tools.
A typical coaching session is based on the GROW modelWho invented Whitmore:
- Goal - what is your goal? What do you want to achieve?
- Reality - Describe your situation now.
- Options - what are the options for achieving the goal? Who can help you? What do you need? Come spend brainstorming.
- Will - what to do to achieve the goal? What are the next steps? When you could do it?
One of the tasks of a coach - to raise the bar for the customer. That is to help the client set higher goals that he achieved more in life.
Now, as he promised to give one of the tools of coaching.
This tool is a comprehensive assessment of the client's life and finding weaknesses in it.
Here 30 questions. Each question should be answered "yes" or "no."
And now count their assessment separately in each area. If the sphere gained at least six "yes", it means that there is a problem. If eight or more - everything is fine. Between six and eight - it would be necessary to improve.
And now your goal - to do so for 90 days to collect all the 30 "yes". Weak? ;)
How can a coach make?
Most often, the coach takes $ 100 per coaching session.
Customers do not seek one-time fee, and buy an average of 5-10 coaching sessions (private clients usually take five corporate - 10). In such cases, a coach can do discounts.
Couch not loaded at 100% of the time. Is considered a good load of 40-60%, as the rest of the time required to travel around the city, attracting new customers, maintain websites and so on.
Many coaches provide training, for which also take a total of about $ 100 per hour.
Take a normal working day a person - 8 hours. When loading 40% of our coach will work 3 hours a day. It will have three coaching session duration of 60 minutes. During this day the coach will earn $ 300 (assuming that the coach did not give discounts).
Within 20 working days the coach earns 6000 dollars.
A person who is not engaged in another activity, except for coaching. There are not many, but I know several representatives.
More frequently, a coach income hovering around 3000 -10 000 USD.
If coaching is not a core activity for the person and in addition he has a permanent job, a coach spends no more than one session per day. And not all of the 5 days he has customers. Usually it is 3-4 days. What makes 300-400 dollars per week or 1 200-1 600 dollars of additional income per month.
There are those coaches who practice coaching solely to maintain its expertise and meets once a week. That gives $ 400 a month.
Could coaching be useful to me?

- Gather up the money for the course (1 000-2 000 dollars).
- Complete the course (on average 1-3 months of intensive classroom training 2-3 days a week, or 10-12 months of online lessons once a week for 60-90 minutes).

My way of coaching: I became them and I gave it
Initially trained coaching I went not to the practice of coaching, and to improve their leadership skills. My team has grown from 2 to 10 people, and you had to learn how to manage them effectively. Since all of the major books on management at the time I read the management boards I was looking for in the field of leadership.
Training on leadership does not cause me interest and respect, so I switched to coaching. I met a coach who told and showed me what is coaching, and my training has begun. I studied at the International Academy of Coaching MAXIMUM (not consider for advertising) Maxim Tsvetkov 10 months, every week for 90 minutes in a webinar format.
Fulfilling all the homework, I started to put yourself goals, work towards their achievement and see the effectiveness of coaching as a way to achieve the objectives (although just wanted to learn how to manage people).
Coaching works like magic: enough to put a goal and realize ways to achieve it, you will automatically start to work on it.
At the end of the course I already had clear objectives in all spheres of life. In addition, my staff noticed a change in my management style, and our relationship became much better.
To obtain a certificate I needed the practice of coaching, so I began to coach all the friends. It so happened that many of them very quickly achieved its objectives. One of my subordinates after months of coaching went to a higher position in another company with a salary twice as high. :)
I realized that coaching works like magic: enough to put a goal and realize ways to achieve it, you will automatically start to work on it.
I received a certificate and began to coach inactive customers who have come to me mainly on the recommendation. Over time, these customers is growing. But for me the main priority - this is my career, I want to be a CEO in 5 years, therefore coaching I did not spend as much time as I could. For me, it is rather an opportunity to earn pocket money on the favorite toys (phone, laptop) at the weekend.
What gave me the coaching:
- Achieve a number of goals (career, health, salary).
- Experience of managing people in a more democratic style.
- Meeting new and interesting people.
- Awareness of its mission.
- A more balanced life.
- Improving relationships with others.
For more information on coaching and development can be found at my site. :)
