Why is "American Horror Story" is disappointing, but it still looks

September 19 will start the ninth season of the famous horror anthology Ryan Murphy. Each season of "American Horror Story" beat any theme based on the classic horror stories and urban legends. And most of the show playing the same actors, each time appearing in a completely new images.
Over the years the authors have already talk about a haunted house, a psychiatric hospital, coven, circus freaks, the hotel built a maniac, and many other fascinating subjects.
The "American horror story" consistently high ratings, and the project has already been pre-extended for the tenth season. But this literally every year repeats the same story: after a few episodes of the story begin to abuse and many drop out view. But the next season of the audience returns, the benefit of the anthology format allows you to watch every new piece separately.
Why is "American Horror Story" is constantly disappoints
Seasons too tight
Ryan Murphy and his frequent collaborator Brad Falchuk able to create a very cheerful and exciting start. They are well acquainted with the characters, and stir up the situation.
But sometimes there is a feeling that by the middle of the season they get tired of work, and the project is given into the hands of other authors who just have to hang on the plot to the required number of series.
If you look at a list of writers who work on the series, these assumptions are confirmed. Of course, few of the major directors personally completely removes series. Bright projects like the third season of "Twin Peaks" David Lynch and "Young Pope" Paolo Sorrentino's can be considered the exception. But in most series showrunner and write often shoot first and final episodes. Murphy and Falchuk so do not always.
There is enough to recall, for example, the second season. In his story perfectly mixed depressive atmosphere of a psychiatric hospital, demonic possession and even kidnapping aliens.
And he was good until about the tenth episode, where the action is suddenly diluted bright musical number. But instead of to finish the season precise point, the audience showed three more series, which gradually led up to too unnatural Happy End.
By the way, over the years, the duration of the seasons has decreased from 13 episodes to 10. But still, "Freak Show" after the death of creepy clown twist becomes much less interesting: it once again say goodbye to the characters too long.
In the sixth season of "Roanoke" is to try to dilute the unexpected twist. From the middle of the authors as it exposes all previous events, showing them in a reality show. Yet even such a move seems too far-fetched and perhaps Murphy should shoot shorter stories for 6-8 series. Then the speaker would be increased, and the viewer does not have time to get bored.
Writers are confused in their own same canons
Up to a certain point every season of "American Horror Story" developed independently. But in the "freak show" Pepper heroine in the finals were taken into a psychiatric hospital, as though explaining that in the second season showed the same character. And that means that they exist in the same world.
But even then there are questions to the other characters, played by actors appearing in previous seasons. It seems to be quite different characters. But they look the same.
And then it becomes even more difficult. Medium Billie Dean Howard, played by Sarah Paulson, appears more in the first season of "House-killer." And then it appears in the "hotel". In this case, Sarah Paulson this season playing more and new character - Sally McKenna. And in addition to all journalist Lana Winters from "mental clinics" appears in the seventh part of a "cult" and gets an interview with the main character Ellie. Both of them again played by Sarah Paulson.
But the apotheosis comes in season-crossover "Apocalypse", which links the events of the "House-killer" and "Sabbath". There are several actors appear in two roles that can completely confuse. And all that Sarah Paulson immediately give three images, in no way connected with each other.
All this does not explain, forcing the viewer to simply believe that the series in the world can appear so similar people. Of course, you should not look absolutely vital logic in the science fiction and horror. But sometimes it begins to resemble an end in itself authors. Or leads to the next point.
Authors too fond of the same actors
Ryan Murphy attachment to a permanent caste is manifested not only in the "horrors of American history." Many regular participants of the project, he invites to other series: Angela Bassett and Connie Britton starred in "9-1-1", Jessica Lange - in the "enmity", Emma Roberts - in the "scream queen".
Of course, many directors have favorites. So, Christopher Nolan in many of his films invites Michael Caine, and Quentin Tarantino - Samuel L. Jackson. That's just there are very different characters and characters who never meet.
But the problem of "American Horror Story" is not only in constant clashes heroines Sarah Paulson with each other. Another favorite author Jessica Lange from season to season comes around in the same way. In the "mental hospital", she plays a strict control institution in the "Sabbath" - strict the supreme witch, guiding pupils in the "Freak Show" - strict mistress circus.
And it turns out, while the rest of the heroes of prescribed new and unexpected characters, her character is literally identical. Of course, for the fourth season it is simply boring. Fortunately, the authors then decided to say goodbye to her (but later returned to the "Apocalypse"). And then Murphy invited her to play exactly the same type of "hate."
Social issues is not always the place
The first season of "American Horror Story" did not affect the global challenges. These were classic horror ghost or maniacs.
Gradually, however, the series began to appear more serious social issues. They, of course, important, but not always suited to this project. For example, in the "cult" heroine suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because of the events of 11 September. And the catalyst for her mental problems become Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election.
Of course, Murphy - an outspoken opponent of the current president of the United States, but still in the plots are enough twists and turns. When a person with PTSD begin to pursue criminals but no one believes him - this is an interesting topic. Value for making such a strong emphasis on politics.
And just as in the "Apocalypse" is too clearly show the horrors of the patriarchal culture. The destruction of the world is the Antichrist, and the witches who are trying to prevent a tragedy, confront male witches. Of course, they want to put women down.
The theme of equality is now the subject of numerous projects. And often they are really important and impressive. But "American Horror Story" shows this too in the forehead, often losing in the artistry.
What is it that is good "American Horror Story"
It would seem that all this criticism of the show would fail after the first couple of seasons. If the audience bored, project ratings falling, and his or somehow alter or simply closed.
Yet every year it continues, and therefore the audience as a whole remains satisfied. And there are several reasons.
This incredibly stylish series
Ryan Murphy - a great visionary. He is able to create amazingly beautiful picture. In such seasons of bright, as the "Sabbath", "Freak Show" or "hotel" every character very well remembered, and only a grotesque image helps it. Moreover, the authors manage to interest the audience before the start of the season, producing a very unusual and stylish promotional materials.
In addition, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk knowingly famous creation of the series' Choir »(Glee). In "American horror story" is a great musical numbers. So, there was the famous Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks, of which fanatela one of the characters in the third season.
But the songs are not limited to invited guests. The "Hotel" Lady Gaga played a full role, and in the "Apocalypse" appeared legendary actress Joan Collins.
This return to classic horror movies
The peak of the traditional horror stories remained far in the past. Now screens out any new, more serious horror movies, or rethinking of classical subjects.
And in terms of stylization "American Horror Story" has no equal. This is familiar to many for a long time the stories about haunted houses, scary clowns and witches. And for those who miss the eerie retro atmosphere, the plot of this series will cause pleasant nostalgia.
And in the ninth season of the authors and does decide to make direct references to the eighties slasher probably picked up fashion, given "Very strange things».
The project has many references to real stories
Whatever it may seem fantastic stories of this series, many of them were surprised to find you can communicate with historical facts.
For example, in the "mental hospital" the image of the terrible places is very similar to the infamous school for mentally retarded "Willowbrook" closed due to abuse of staff with children.
Twist of "Freak Show" - an allusion to the serial killer John Gacy, the clown appears in the form Pogo. And there appears Edward Mordake - one of the most famous people with physical disabilities: this man was the second person in the back of his head. Well, the "Roanoke" refers to the eponymous British colony that disappeared in America in the XVI century.
The result is that every season of "American Horror Story", at least to begin to look interesting. But, alas, usually after a few episodes of elation is replaced by boredom. So until next time.
