There are many studies confirming the positive impact of running and physical exercises overall mental abilities, but this is not the only bonus that we get at running. It turns out that a simple half-hour jog will not only make you clevererBut also improve your fine motor skills!
recent studyPublished in PLOS ONE, showed that a half-hour jog improves motor skills.
The tasks that test, called Sequential Visual Isometric Pinch Task (SVIPT). You gently squeeze force sensor between your thumb and forefinger and squeeze the harder, the more moves the cursor on the computer screen. The task - to move the cursor as quickly and accurately as possible, to five locations, which are located in different places on the screen. The 4 sets of 30 attempts to measure the speed and accuracy of the task.
The results showed that subjects better cope with an assignment after 30 minute run at a moderate pace immediately prior to testing. Participants in the experiment, which rested within an hour of jogging, still better cope with the task, but still not as good as the first group. The most notable improvements were not in the speed of movement of the cursor, and accuracy.
The second part of the study was to 4-day experiment, during which the participants performed the same tasks, but on the fourth day, no one was running before performing the task. The result is still the same group of runners showed the best results, although she did not have a half-hour before the test runs. This proves that the race is not just giving a temporary improvement of motor skills, but also in general increases the accuracy and speed of your movements and reactions.
How does this happen? The researchers offer two main theories: the psychological and neuroendocrine. Psychological theory suggests that exercise is simply to help you cheer up and better focus. Neuroendocrine model attributes this positive effect of increase in the level of these chemicals, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, serotonin, dopamine, and so on. Both versions have between them something in common, but the researchers suggest that the neuroendocrine theory agrees better with the fact that the effect disappeared after an hour's rest.
The data obtained can be used for the rehabilitation of people who have suffered strokes. And yes, if you have to participate in the tournament on video games or need to do some work, It requires good coordination, accuracy and speed, before it should reach the half-hour jog. ;)
